A Wave of Peace: Men in Recovery Connections
Dear Friends in Recovery,
This month, as we explore "Men's Health in Recovery," I'd like to focus on the unique challenges and societal pressures that men face on their journey towards healing.
In a recent men's STOP & FLOW group session, an older participant, while mourning, chose to observe rather than participate. His presence was impactful, and during the session, he experienced a wave of peace that affirmed the powerful exchange of freedom and support offered by STOP & FLOW. How remarkable is it to hear that 20 men achieved a peaceful homeostasis, not only for themselves but also influencing one another?
This experience unfolded outdoors, under the canopy of nature, where each movement and breath seemed to lift the collective weight of our burdens. As societal expectations about masculinity temporarily fell away, we posed a reflective question: "Where can I be more gentle, softer, more supportive with myself to be stronger?"
Reflecting on our roles and the space we need can benefit us all. There is a critical need for supportive communities tailored specifically for men, where traditional roles do not exacerbate recovery challenges but are addressed and eased. Men are more likely to suffer from substance use disorders and less likely to seek help due to stigma and rigid notions of masculinity, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
Engaging in STOP & FLOW, which integrates mindfulness and authentic empowering movement, has proven to be such a space.
This week’s Connect to Calm Pro Tips:
Find Your Community: Engaging with groups that foster authentic expressions for you can provide significant therapeutic benefits, promoting mental health and strengthening social connections.
Embrace Nature: Incorporating activities in natural settings can dramatically reduce recovery stress, offering a peaceful space for healing.
Communicate Openly: Encouraging vulnerable and transparent discussions about the challenges and triumphs of masculinity can enhance the recovery process, breaking down barriers and deepening understanding within support networks.
I’d love to hear from you:
